We are an overweight/obese nation!
Fact: many people cannot digest modern day wheat/gluten!
Improper digestion of gluten can affect our blood sugar and subsequently our weight; many of my patients who go off gluten do experience significant weight loss without making other changes.
Fact: switching to 'gluten free' versions of bread, cookies, pasta, waffles ect is going to keep us fat or fatter!
The patients who lose weight off gluten usually do so because there decreasing there overall intake of refined carbohydrates and sugars. Gluten free products still contain sugar a lot of the time and can actually have higher glycemic index ratings than there glutinous friends. So beware!!
Solution: go gluten free but significantly decrease overall consumption of refined carbohydrates!
If you’re going to eat grains, stick to options like:
- quinoa, wild/brown rice, sweet potato
Also, you should be eating lean protein at EVERY meal & eating 5-10 servings of vegetables/fruits each day!
That’s where smoothies come in: if you’re a patient of mine you know about my smoothie obsession. Its just the easiest way to pack in loads of veggies/fruits and even protein with the help of a vegan protein powder. In the winter I add warm water or green tea instead of ice and water.
I have had a green protein smoothie almost every single day for the past 5 years! Its my favorite healthy morning ritual!
